Why Are My Lights Flickering?

Flickering lights are one of those things that are easy to dismiss. You reset the bulb, it seems fine, and you get on with your day. But flickering lights are your electrical installation trying to tell you something, and the message ranges from entirely trivial to genuinely serious depending on the pattern, the location, and what else is happening at the time.

This guide works through every common cause, starting with the simplest and progressing to the ones that warrant a call to a qualified electrician. Understanding which category your flickering falls into is the key to knowing whether you need a new bulb or a professional investigation.

Start Here: What Is the Pattern?

Before looking at individual causes, the pattern of flickering tells you a great deal about where to look.

A single light flickering intermittently, particularly when it is first switched on or when it is warm, points toward the bulb, the fitting, or a local connection issue.

Flickering that happens when a large appliance such as a washing machine, dishwasher, or kettle starts up points toward voltage fluctuation on the circuit, which is often normal but can indicate overloading.

Flickering that is consistent, rhythmic, or constant without any obvious trigger is more concerning and may indicate a wiring fault or a failing protective device.

Flickering across multiple rooms simultaneously, or across the whole house, is a red flag that points toward a problem at the consumer unit, the main incoming supply, or the service connection. This warrants an immediate call to a qualified electrician.

Flickering accompanied by a burning smell, visible discolouration at switches or sockets, a buzzing or crackling sound, or a warm switch or ceiling rose needs to be treated as an urgent fault. Turn off the affected circuit at the consumer unit and call an electrician without delay.

Cause 1: A Loose or Failing Bulb

This is the most common cause of a single flickering light and the easiest to rule out. A bulb that isn’t fully seated in its fitting makes intermittent contact with the socket, causing the light to flicker or cut out.

Turn off the light and allow the bulb to cool fully before touching it. Remove and reseat it firmly, ensuring it is fully engaged with the socket contacts. While you’re there, inspect the socket contacts for signs of corrosion, burning, or deformation. Corroded contacts can often be cleaned; damaged sockets should be replaced.

If the bulb is loose due to vibration, for example from footfall above or machinery nearby, consider whether the fitting itself is appropriate for the location.

An old or failing bulb can also flicker as it approaches the end of its life. LED bulbs are considerably more durable than their predecessors but they do fail, and a bulb that has been running for many years may simply need replacing.

Cause 2: Dimmer Switch Incompatibility

This is the most common cause of flickering with LED lighting, and it is extremely widespread in UK homes. Understanding why requires a brief explanation of how LED dimmers work.

Traditional dimmer switches were designed for incandescent bulbs, which work by regulating voltage. They operate by cutting the AC waveform, either at the front of each cycle (leading edge) or at the rear (trailing edge). Incandescent bulbs are resistive loads and respond predictably to either method.

LED bulbs are fundamentally different. They contain an electronic driver that converts mains voltage to the low DC voltage the LED chips actually run on. Many older leading-edge dimmers are not compatible with the electronic drivers in LED bulbs and cause them to flicker, buzz, or fail to dim smoothly, particularly at the lower and upper ends of the dimming range.

The fix is to replace the dimmer with one that is specifically designed and rated for LED use. A good quality LED-compatible trailing-edge dimmer will typically resolve the problem. You also need to check that the LED bulbs themselves are marked as dimmable. Non-dimmable LED bulbs will not dim correctly regardless of the dimmer switch used, and attempting to dim them can cause flickering or reduce the life of the bulb.

A subtlety worth noting in UK installations is that most domestic lighting circuits are wired without a neutral conductor at the switch position. This means dimmers must draw a small continuous current through the lamp itself to power their electronics, which can cause problems with certain LED types. If you are experiencing this issue and a standard LED dimmer hasn’t resolved it, an electrician can advise on the most suitable solution for your specific wiring arrangement.

Cause 3: Minimum Load Problems

LED dimmers have a minimum load requirement, meaning they need a certain total wattage of LED load connected to function correctly. If the connected load, say a single 5W LED spotlight, falls below the dimmer’s minimum load threshold, the dimmer may flicker, buzz, or simply not dim properly.

This is a common problem when a dimmer installed for a bank of halogen downlighters is left in place after the halogens are replaced with LEDs. The total wattage drops dramatically, and the old dimmer suddenly finds itself well below its minimum load. Replacing the dimmer with a modern LED-rated unit with a low minimum load threshold will typically resolve this.

Cause 4: Voltage Fluctuations From Appliances

Lights that briefly dip or flicker when a large appliance starts up, particularly washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers, and electric showers, are experiencing a voltage fluctuation caused by the startup current draw of the appliance motor or heating element. The sudden demand pulls voltage down momentarily, which the lighting detects as a brief dip.

This is a normal characteristic of domestic electrical installations and doesn’t necessarily indicate a fault. Electrical Safety First notes that occasional brief dimming when a large appliance starts is common in UK homes, particularly in older properties where circuits may be shared more broadly.

However, if the dip is significant, frequent, or seems to be getting worse over time, it is worth having an electrician assess the installation. Persistent or severe voltage fluctuation can indicate that circuits are overloaded, that the consumer unit is not adequately segregating high-demand circuits, or in more unusual cases that there is a problem with the incoming supply from the network.

If lights throughout the whole house dim simultaneously when any large appliance starts, or if the flickering is severe rather than a brief momentary dip, that is beyond what would be considered normal and merits investigation.

Cause 5: Overloaded Circuit

An overloaded circuit occurs when the total connected load exceeds what the circuit was designed to supply. This can cause voltage to sag intermittently, producing flickering in lighting connected to the same circuit.

In modern installations with properly designed circuits, overloading is less common. In older properties where circuits were designed around the lower loads of a previous era, or where additional loads have been added over time without consideration of the total circuit demand, overloading is a realistic cause of persistent voltage fluctuation and flickering.

If your consumer unit has shared RCDs or if multiple circuits are grouped together, a persistent fault on one circuit can also affect others it shares protection with. This is another reason why the move to individual RCBOs per circuit in modern 18th Edition consumer units is a meaningful improvement, as a fault on one circuit affects only that circuit and does not degrade voltage quality elsewhere.

Cause 6: Loose Connections

This is where flickering moves from an inconvenience into a genuine safety concern. A loose connection in a light fitting, a junction box, a switch, or anywhere in the wiring path creates an intermittent fault. As the connection moves, arcs, or degrades further, the current path becomes inconsistent and the light flickers.

Loose connections generate heat. A loose connection that is intermittently arcing is producing localised heating at the point of fault, and that heat can ignite surrounding materials. This is one of the recognised causes of electrical fires in UK homes, and it is the reason why flickering that cannot be explained by a bulb or dimmer issue needs to be taken seriously.

Loose connections can develop over time as thermal cycling causes terminal screws to work loose. They can result from installation where connections weren’t sufficiently tightened in the first place. They are also common in older installations using older connector types that have degraded. The transition to lever-action connectors in modern installations provides better resistance to loosening over time, but older screw-terminal connections in junction boxes and ceiling roses are a common source of this problem in properties that haven’t been rewired.

The concerning characteristic of a loose connection is that it can flicker intermittently for a long period before becoming serious. Do not assume that because the flickering comes and goes it isn’t worth investigating. An electrician can trace the fault using the kind of systematic approach that isn’t practical or safe for a homeowner to attempt themselves.

Cause 7: A Failing or Faulty Fitting, or a Failing 12V Driver

Ceiling roses, pendant fittings, and recessed downlighter fittings all have a finite service life. The contacts inside them can corrode, the lampholders can become loose, and the internal wiring connections can degrade over time. A fitting that has been in service for many years, particularly in a kitchen or bathroom where it has been exposed to moisture and steam, may be internally degraded even if it appears visually intact.

A specific and increasingly common cause of flickering in recessed downlighters is a failing 12V driver. Many low-voltage downlighter installations, particularly GU5.3 MR16 fittings that were popular in kitchens and bathrooms through the 2000s and early 2010s, use a transformer or electronic driver to step the mains 230V supply down to 12V for the lamp. These drivers have a rated lifespan, and as they age they can become unreliable, producing flickering, intermittent outages, or a buzzing sound from the fitting.

The problem is compounded when MR16 halogen lamps in these fittings are replaced with LED equivalents. The original driver was sized for the wattage of halogen lamps, typically 35W or 50W per fitting. LED MR16 lamps may draw only 5W or 6W, which can push the driver well below its minimum load threshold, producing exactly the flickering described in Cause 3 above. In this case the driver itself is not necessarily failing, it is simply mismatched to the new load.

If a single downlighter or a group on the same driver is flickering and the LED bulbs and dimmer have already been checked, the driver is the most likely culprit. Drivers can be replaced without rewiring the installation, but the replacement needs to be sized correctly for the lamps it will supply. An electrician can identify the right specification and replace the driver safely, which involves working in the ceiling void and handling mains-voltage connections.

Overheating is also worth considering with recessed downlighters. If insulation has been laid directly over the fitting in a loft space without a fire hood to maintain an air gap, the fitting can run excessively hot. Heat degrades LED driver components over time and will shorten the lifespan of both the driver and the LED itself. This is one of the reasons fire hoods are required on downlighters installed below insulated ceilings, they protect both the fire separation layer and the fitting itself.

Cause 8: Problems at the Consumer Unit or Incoming Supply

Flickering that affects multiple rooms simultaneously, or that doesn’t correspond to any single circuit or appliance, points toward a problem at the heart of the installation rather than in any individual circuit.

Loose connections at the consumer unit, a failing main switch, or problems with the incoming service conductors can all produce voltage instability that shows up as flickering across the whole property. The incoming supply conductors from the meter to the consumer unit, and the meter tails themselves, carry the full load of the installation. A loose or degraded connection at this point affects everything downstream.

This type of problem must be investigated by a qualified electrician. The consumer unit and the supply conductors are not safe to investigate without proper training, test equipment, and safe isolation procedures. If flickering is whole-house and persistent, call an electrician. If it is accompanied by any of the warning signs mentioned at the start of this guide, treat it as urgent.

Cause 9: A Problem With the Network Supply

In some cases the fault lies not within the property’s installation but in the incoming supply from the electricity distribution network. Voltage that is consistently high, consistently low, or fluctuating outside normal tolerance is a network issue rather than a domestic one.

The network operator has a duty to maintain supply voltage within defined limits under the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. If you suspect your supply voltage is abnormal, your electricity supplier or network operator can investigate. In the UK, you can report supply quality concerns to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) by calling 105.

If flickering is affecting multiple properties in the street, or if neighbours report similar problems, a network issue is more likely than a domestic fault.

When to Call an Electrician Immediately

To summarise the situations that require a call to a qualified electrician rather than a DIY investigation:

Flickering is accompanied by a burning smell, buzzing, crackling, or a warm switch or fitting. Flickering affects multiple rooms or the whole house. Flickering cannot be explained by the bulb, dimmer, or a known appliance startup event. Flickering is associated with a circuit that also trips or fails to hold. You notice any discolouration, scorching, or blackening at a switch, socket, or ceiling rose. The consumer unit is old, the installation hasn’t been inspected in many years, or you don’t know the history of the electrical installation.

Persistent unexplained flickering is one of the warning signs that an EICR is overdue. The inspection and testing process, carried out to BS 7671 and the methodology set out in IET Guidance Note 3, is specifically designed to find the kinds of hidden faults, loose connections, deteriorated insulation, and failing devices, that cause symptoms like flickering before they develop into something more serious. If you are regularly resetting trips or noticing electrical irregularities in your property, an EICR will give you a clear, factual picture of the actual condition of the installation.
