Immersion Heater Timerr Not Working
An immersion heater timer that stops working does not always mean the heater is broken.
In many cases the fault is in the timer itself, in its programme, or in how it has been set up, and understanding where to start looking can save you the cost and inconvenience of an unnecessary service call.
This guide works through the checks in a logical sequence, starting with the simplest and moving toward the faults that need an electrician.
First: Is the Problem the Timer or the Heater?
Before checking anything on the timer, do the override test. Most immersion heater timers, whether mechanical or electronic, have a manual override: a lever, a switch, or a button that bypasses the programmed schedule and switches the heater on directly.
Find the override and activate it, then wait 30 minutes and check whether the water in the cylinder is warming up.
If the override works and the water begins to heat, the heater itself is functioning normally.
The problem is in the timer programme, the timer mechanism, or the timer settings.
Work through the checks below.
If the override does not work and the heater stays cold, the fault is upstream of the timer, in the isolator switch, the wiring, or the circuit protective device at the consumer unit, or the heater itself has a fault.
Check the consumer unit first and look for a tripped MCB or RCBO labelled immersion or water heater.
If the circuit is live and the override still produces no heat, you need an electrician.
Types of Immersion Heater Timer: What You Are Working With
Before going through the specific checks, it helps to understand the type of timer you have, because the way each type works and the way each type fails are different.
Mechanical Pin Timers
The mechanical pin timer is the traditional type fitted in UK airing cupboards for decades. It has a circular dial that rotates continuously, making one full revolution every 24 hours.
Around the outer edge of the dial is a ring of slots, typically divided into 15 or 30-minute segments, into which small plastic pegs or pins can be pushed.
Each pin represents a period of time when the heater will be on.
When the pin passes the switching point on the timer body, it activates the internal contacts and switches the heater on.
When the segment without a pin reaches that point, the contacts open and the heater switches off.
Mechanical pin timers are simple, reliable, and require no power to retain their programme because the programme is physical: the pins in the dial. They do not lose their settings in a power cut. They are also inexpensive to replace.
The limitations of mechanical timers are equally simple. The minimum on or off period is determined by the width of each segment, typically 15 or 30 minutes. Finer control than that is not possible. The current time is set by rotating the dial manually to align the correct time with the pointer on the timer body. If the dial is not set to the correct time, the heater will switch on and off at the wrong times. And because the timer mechanism is driven by a small synchronous motor that uses the mains frequency as its reference, a power cut that lasts more than a few seconds will cause the dial to stop and the indicated time to fall behind the actual time.
Electronic Display Timers
Electronic timers replaced mechanical pin timers in many installations from the 1990s onwards and are now the most common type fitted in new or upgraded installations. They have a digital display showing the current time and programme status, and they are programmed using buttons rather than physical pins.
Electronic timers offer finer time control than mechanical types, typically in 1-minute or 10-minute increments rather than 15 or 30-minute slots. Many allow different programmes for weekdays and weekends. Some allow multiple on and off periods within a single day. The programme is stored in the timer’s internal memory.
The main limitation of an electronic timer is that most models lose their programme when power is interrupted. When the power comes back on, the display may show 00:00 or flash, and the timer will not switch the heater on until it has been reprogrammed with the current time and a new schedule. Some electronic timers include a battery backup, either a replaceable AA or AAA cell or a rechargeable internal battery, that maintains the programme and current time through a power cut. If the battery has failed or been removed, the timer behaves as if it has no memory.
Bluetooth and Smart Timers
The newest generation of immersion heater timers incorporates Bluetooth connectivity, allowing the timer to be programmed and monitored from a smartphone app rather than through buttons on the timer body itself. Models from manufacturers including Drayton, Timeguard, and others allow the homeowner to set schedules, adjust times, and check the status of the heater from their phone, without needing to open the airing cupboard.
Bluetooth timers offer the same fine time control as standard electronic timers, with the added convenience of app-based programming. This is particularly useful where the timer is in an awkward location or where the homeowner wants to adjust the programme remotely, for example turning on the boost an hour before arriving home. Some models also log heater run times, helping to identify whether the element is taking longer to heat the cylinder than it used to, which can indicate limescale buildup on the element.
The limitation of Bluetooth timers is the same as any electronic timer: they require mains power to operate and most will lose their programme in a power cut unless they have battery backup. The Bluetooth connection is also limited to the range of the phone, typically around 10 metres, and requires the app to be installed and the phone to be present for programming changes. However, once programmed the timer runs independently of the phone.
Check 1: Is the Timer Powered?
For Electronic and Bluetooth Timers
Look at the display. Is it lit and showing a time? If the display is blank, the timer has lost power. Check the consumer unit for a tripped MCB or RCBO on the immersion heater circuit and reset it if needed.
If the display is showing 00:00 or flashing, the timer has power but has lost its programme, almost certainly due to a power cut. The timer needs reprogramming. See Check 2 below.
If the display is showing a time but it is wrong, the timer has power but the time has not been set correctly. See Check 3 below.
For Mechanical Timers
Is the dial rotating? Hold a finger lightly against the dial for 30 seconds and feel whether it is moving. A properly working mechanical timer dial rotates continuously and slowly. If the dial is stationary, either the timer has lost power or the motor has failed.
Check the consumer unit as above. If the circuit is live but the dial still does not rotate, the motor inside the timer has failed and the timer needs replacing.
Check 2: Reprogramming After a Power Cut
If your electronic timer has lost its programme, reprogramming it is the fix. The exact process varies between models but follows the same general steps for most units.
First, set the current time. There is usually a dedicated button, sometimes labelled Clock or Time, that puts the timer into time-setting mode. Use the hour and minute buttons to set the correct current time. Confirm it is set to AM or PM correctly if the timer uses a 12-hour display.
Next, set the on and off periods. Depending on the model, this may involve pressing a Programme or Timer button and then stepping through the on and off periods for each day. Set the on period to start early enough for the element to fully heat the cylinder, typically two hours before you need hot water for a 150-litre cylinder with a 3kW element.
If you have lost the manual for the timer, the model number is usually printed on the front of the unit. A search for the model number and the word manual will usually find a downloadable PDF. Manufacturers including Timeguard, Horstmann, Sangamo, and Grasslin all have documentation available online for current and discontinued products.
If your timer has a battery, check it. A battery that is flat will mean the timer loses its programme with every power cut regardless of how many times it is reprogrammed. The battery is usually a standard size, accessible by removing a small cover on the back or side of the timer.
For Bluetooth timers, open the app and check whether the timer still shows as connected. If it has lost its programme, the app will guide you through reprogramming. If the timer no longer appears in the app, try toggling Bluetooth off and on again on your phone and ensure you are within range of the timer.
Check 3: Verify the Current Time and Programme
This is the most common cause of an apparently non-functional timer, and the easiest to fix.
For a mechanical timer, the current time is indicated by the position of the pointer on the timer body relative to the dial. If the time shown does not match the actual time, the dial needs to be rotated to the correct position. On most mechanical timers, the dial can be rotated clockwise manually to advance the time. Align the current time with the pointer. Remember to account for daylight saving time: if the clocks have changed and the timer has not been adjusted, the heater will be switching on and off one hour early or late.
For an electronic timer, check the displayed time against a reliable clock. If it is wrong, correct it using the time-setting process described above. Also check the programme settings. It is not uncommon to find that a programme has been set with AM and PM confused, or that the on period has been set for Sunday when the timer is actually running a Monday programme.
For a mechanical pin timer, physically count the pins around the dial. Each pin should represent one time segment in which the heater is on. Check that the pins are securely in their slots and that none have fallen out. Check that the pins are in the segments corresponding to the times when you want the heater on, accounting for the current time alignment of the dial.
Check 4: Is the Timer Mechanism Working?
For a mechanical timer where the dial is rotating correctly but the heater does not switch on during the programmed period, the internal switching contacts may be worn or corroded. These contacts carry the full 13-amp immersion heater load every time the heater switches on and off, and over many years of use they can pit, corrode, or fail to make reliable contact.
Signs of contact failure include a heater that works intermittently rather than not at all, or one that works sometimes but skips some of its programmed on periods. A timer with worn contacts is at the end of its serviceable life and should be replaced rather than repaired.
For an electronic timer where the programme appears correct and the display shows the programme as active, but the heater does not respond, the internal relay that switches the heater circuit may have failed. The relay is the component that translates the electronic timer’s switching signal into an actual connection in the heater circuit. A failed relay is not something that can be repaired in the field. The timer needs replacing.
Check 5: Economy 7 and Dual-Element Arrangements
If the property is on an Economy 7 tariff and has a dual-element cylinder, the overnight charging circuit is typically switched not by the standard timer but by the Economy 7 meter’s own switching arrangement. This is a separate supply circuit that is energised by the electricity supplier during the off-peak period, either via a ripple control signal embedded in the supply or via a time-switching relay at the meter.
If the overnight charging element is not coming on, the fault may be in this supplier-side switching arrangement rather than in any timer in the airing cupboard. Contact your electricity supplier to confirm that the off-peak switching is active and correctly configured for your meter. In some areas, suppliers have updated their metering systems or changed the off-peak switching signal, and older meters or receivers may no longer operate correctly with the new system.
The boost element circuit, which is on a standard mains supply, is typically controlled by the airing cupboard timer or a separate boost switch. If the boost works but the overnight charge does not, or vice versa, identifying which circuit and which element has the fault is the starting point for diagnosis.
When to Call an Electrician
Call a qualified electrician if the manual override does not produce heat, since this indicates the fault is in the wiring, isolator, or element rather than the timer.
Also call if the timer appears powered and correctly programmed but the heater still does not respond, as a wiring fault between the timer and the element is likely.
If there are any signs of overheating, burning smell, scorch marks, or discolouration at the timer or on the surrounding wall, this needs immediate attention.
Timer replacement itself, where the timer has clearly failed and needs a new one, is electrician work.
The connections at the timer terminals carry the full immersion heater load, and reconnecting them correctly, in the right terminals and with the correct polarity, is not a job for trial and error.
A new timer also needs to be of the correct type for the existing wiring arrangement: a two-channel timer for a dual-element cylinder, for example, wired differently from a single-channel timer for a single-element installation.
If you are upgrading from an old mechanical pin timer to a modern electronic or Bluetooth timer, the wiring arrangement is usually compatible, but an electrician will verify this and make the connections safely, leaving you with a timer that is correctly installed and working from day one.
